The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
