Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators

The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”

Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent examples involve:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the billionaire owner.

Recent Issues and Public Spotlight

This event comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in building the Cowboys into the globe’s highest-worth athletic organization, even with its modern-era title shortcomings.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones underscores its continuing initiative to maintain proper behavior among all team officials, regardless of their position or wealth.
