India's capital Rises to Hazardous Smog After Celebrations
Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves inhaling dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" range.
Alarming Air Quality Levels
Several parts of the capital showed an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the healthy limit established by the WHO.
In some locations, readings of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding safe standards.
Pyrotechnics Ban and Current Developments
Since 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the deadly smog that covers the metropolis as winter begins.
Nevertheless recently, the recently formed regional government appealed to the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the ban.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a compromise between "heritage and environment".
Legal Ruling and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of medical and ecological campaigners, judicial authorities approved the request, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific hours throughout the celebrations.

Many monitoring devices throughout the capital registered air quality peaking around late evening to some of the worst levels seen during the festival in at least the past three years.

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a controversy with adjacent the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to declining atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on contaminants traveling from India following the events.

Within these states, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating toxic pollution that becomes contained over the city as winter air descends.
Public Health and Financial Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million people residing in the capital region is substantial, according to various research.
The contaminated air causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand premature deaths annually in the city.
